Dr.
Carla Hellekson has been practicing Psychiatry and Sleep Medicine in the
Puget Sound area since 1989. Prior to that, she practiced in Alaska in
both Anchorage and Fairbanks for 10 years. Her areas of interest include
the full range of sleep disorders, especially the behavioral,
dialectical behavioral, and pharmacological approaches of insomnia;
light therapy for Seasonal Affective Disorder and Circadian Rhythm
Disorders; adult and geriatric psychiatry; and contemplative
psychotherapy.
She received her medical training at Dartmouth Medical School where she
graduated with honors. Her Rotating Internship was at Virginia Mason
Medical Center. Her Psychiatric Residency and Sleep Research
Fellowship were at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. Honorable
discharge from the US Air Force followed a three year tour at Elmendorf
AFB, Alaska. Honors include Alpha Omega Alpha, Distinguished Fellow of
the American Psychiatric Association, and Fellow of the American Academy
of Sleep Medicine. She is a charter member of the Society for Light
Therapy and Biological Rhythms, and numerous other professional
organizations. She taught as Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry
at the UW School of Medicine for twenty years. She is a member of the
American Academy of Sleep Medicine, Insomnia Section.
